La Flor Dominicana Digger

Sorry about the late post, I didn't have a chance to get anything reviewed quickly enough for my normal monday post. This week's review is of the LFD Digger. A buddy of mine gifted me this monster of a cigar for my birthday last month (I think he might be trying to kill me). The Digger started as a limited production cigar as a request from an LFD fan (nicknamed Digger) for a larger version of the DL700 and this cigar is the response to that request. It sold so fast that LFD decided to make it a full production cigar with a natural version coming soon. The Digger measures in at 8.5x60, making it one of the largest cigars I have ever smoked. This huge cigar has a maduro wrapper and is a Dominican puro. This is a very intimidating cigar, not only because of its immense size but also because it is part of the Double Ligero line, which are known for their strength. I must be out of my mind to be smoking this cigar today, its 95 degrees out here!
The Digger looks like you could beat somebody to death with it if you wanted to. This thing is hefty and solidly rolled. This is a lot of tobacco! The wrapper is very dark with an uneven color to it (pretty normal with LFD Maduros) and has some larger veins and plenty of oil. There is a sweet tobacco aroma coming off of the foot of this cigar. The prelight draw shows a good draw with rich flavors of leather, cocoa and coffee. The Digger starts out with huge flavors of deep leather and earth with plenty of tongue tingling spice. The spice really lingers on the palate. An inch in and the spice has started to back off a bit and flavors of mocha and cedar are starting to come through. The burn needed a few touchups but that could be due to the high humidity outside where I am smoking it. I am surprised this thing will even stay lit with the humidity level out here. A slight raisin taste that I frequently notice in LFD cigars has shown up. This is a bold cigar with a ton of rich, heavy flavors. The ash holds on easily for one inch chunks.
As I reach the halfway point the flavors have remained consistent and tasty. There hasn't been a whole lot of change in the flavor department, but I am enjoying the full flavors I have come to expect from La Flor Dominicana's. It is way too hot to be smoking such a huge (and strong) cigar but I am still enjoying it. The strength and body are well into the full range but not overwhelming at this point.
Entering the final third and the strength has gone up a knotch. The flavors are still consistent but are starting to get slightly muddled towards the very end. The cigar is getting a bit spongy as well. This is not a cigar for beginners due to the size and strength but it isn't one of those cigars that the strength overwhelms the flavors. Two hours and 35 minutes later and the Digger is done! I figured this would take at least three hours but I might have been smoking a little fast due to the fact that I am getting tired of being out in the heat.
If you like LFDs and enjoy HUGE cigars then the Digger is worth trying! Personally I doubt I'll smoke another Digger because it is just too damn big for me. I did enjoy the flavors but I think I would rather just smoke 2 or 3 more traditional sized Double Ligero cigars from LFD. At around $10 its a pretty good price for this much tobacco. I am glad I had the chance to try one and I might see myself trying the natural if one falls in my lap, but I doubt ill chase one down. I know there is a market for these massive cigars but I am definitely not the target audience for a cigar like this.
